PhD Jedrzej S. Bojanowski
Jędrzej S. Bojanowski – assistant professor in Remote Sensing Centre – specializes in application of satellite data in environmental studies: climatology and monitoring of agriculture.
His main research interests are:
- processing, verification and analysis of satellite-based climate data records on cloud cover, cloud physical properties, short-wave downward radiation, and land surface temperature;
- geostatistical merging of satellite data and meteorological ground measurements;
- modelling of cloud cover based on measurements of long-wave incoming radiation;
- modelling of short-wave downward radiation based on measurements of meteorological parameters: sunshine duration, cloud cover and air temperature range;
- scientific programming, big data analysis and
- automation of satellite data processing and analysis
He graduated from the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies at the University of Warsaw with a master's degree in remote sensing and geographic information systems. He received a PhD degree in 2014 from the Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation of the University of Twente, Netherlands.
In the years 2006-2009 he worked in IGiK as a research assistant on the application of satellite data for monitoring of agriculture in a frame of GEOLAND-OFM (Observatory food security and crop monitoring) project, within which he co-developed a semi-automatic system of the crop growth monitoring in Poland.
In 2008 he gained further research experience working as a trainee on remote sensing of burned areas in the Global Environment Monitoring Unit of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre in Ispra, Italy. In 2010-2012 he was contracted in the Monitoring Agricultural Resources Unit of the Joint Research Centre, where he worked on satellite-based and modelling methods for an improved estimation of daily surface solar radiation to be used for operational crop growth modelling in Europe.
In the years 2013-2016 he worked as a post-doctorate researcher at the Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss in Zurich. His work focused on satellite climatology and was carried out in a frame of two international research projects: Cloud_cci (of European Space Agency) and CM-SAF (of EUMETSAT), related to development of satellite-based climate data records of cloud physical properties and land surface temperature.
He has come back to IGiK to conduct a research project funded by the National Science Center on: Variability and change of cloudiness diurnal cycle over the past 30 years: a global analysis based on polar orbiting satellites.
