Last week, the Remote Sensing Center team conducted an inspection of the damage to an automatic weather station that was affected by a peat bog fire in the Biebrza National Park. In April 2025, the fire engulfed 185 hectares of environmentally valuable marsh and peatland areas, also destroying the research infrastructure of the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography. The automatic weather station equipped with an Eddy Covariance system and a set of meteorological and environmental sensors used to monitor greenhouse gas exchange, atmospheric conditions, solar radiation, soil properties, and vegetation condition was destroyed.
The photographs show the extent of the damage to both the station itself and the surrounding area. They reveal traces of peat burning in the subsurface layers and charred stumps of sedges, vegetation characteristic of peat bogs.
