MSc Filip Świątek is a graduate of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies at the University of Warsaw, specializing in geoinformatics, cartography, and remote sensing. He focuses his scientific work on processing old maps and more broadly on the topic of historical GIS. His interests however include all kinds of analyses using spatial data. His ambition is finding new, hidden uses for spatial data and for that he employs the latest technological advancements. For his bachelors thesis he researched the usefulness of data gathered by volunteers in the OpenStreetMap project. For his masters thesis he took on methods for automatically vectorizing small-scale maps, with particular focus on methods using deep neural networks. Presently he is pursuing this subject at the Doctoral School of Exact and Natural Sciences of the University of Warsaw, as a PhD student at the Cartography Laboratory, of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies. He started work at the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography in october of 2025, where his present occupation is Junior Specialist. He can swiftly operate in GIS type enviornments, process remote sensing data, and uses Python, R and JavaScript to enhance his analyses.
