Smart System for Monitoring and Estimating Carbon Storage and Leakage in Agriculture Using Satellite Data – Towards Carbon Tax for the Agriculture Sector
The project aims to develop and validate a functional system prototype (MVP) designed for estimating carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration and detecting carbon leakage resulting from agricultural practices at the individual farm level. The solution will be based on satellite data and meteorological information, employing advanced machine learning algorithms.
During the implementation, a comprehensive user needs assessment will be carried out, followed by refinement of the system architecture and its key functionalities to ensure alignment with the expectations of farmers as well as institutions involved in the implementation of the European Green Deal. System validation will be performed using existing ground-truth data, ensuring its practical applicability and readiness for further development.
The project is addressed to farmers, agricultural advisors, public administration, and companies and institutions supporting sustainable agriculture, climate protection, and the implementation of environmental policies. Its main objective is to provide a tool that enables users to estimate farm-level carbon balance, support practices enhancing CO2 sequestration, and prepare for the requirements of future emission reporting systems, including a potential carbon tax in the agricultural sector.
The expected outcome of the project is a validated system prototype that may subsequently be commercialized through a spin-off company. The system will enable users to make more informed agricultural decisions in the context of emission reduction and income enhancement through participation in carbon accounting mechanisms.
