Monika Wilde-Piórko, Associate Professor

Associate Professor at the Centre of Geodesy and Geodynamics IGiK, specialist in lithosphere physics, carries out scientific activities related to the study of the structure of the Earth's crust and mantle by seismic methods using gravimetric recordings and mapping of the gravity field in marine areas.

In 1997, she completed her MSc degree at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, specialising in lithosphere physics. Her Master's thesis entitled "Seismic structure of the Earth's crust based on the receiver function of the Suwałki station" was written under the supervision of Prof. Marek Grad, as was her doctoral thesis entitled "Modelling of seismic structure of the crust and upper mantle from receiver function" (2002, University of Warsaw). In 2017, she was awarded a postdoctoral degree (habilitation) in physics in the discipline of physics at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, for a series of publications entitled "Seismic receiver function - techniques of analysis of the lithosphere and mantle transition zone’s structures".

From 1997 to 2002, she was a student of the Doctoral Program at the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw (UW), and then an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Physics UW from 2002 to 2017. From 2006 to 2013, she was the Head of the Department of Physics of the Lithosphere at the Institute of Geophysics of the Faculty of Physics UW, and from 2016 to 2017, the Deputy Director of the Institute of Geophysics of the Faculty of Physics UW. She was a member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Geophysics of the Faculty of Physics UW from 1999 to 2005, and its Secretary from 2005 to 2016, as well as a member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Physics UW from 2005 to 2017. At the end of 2017, she started working at the Centre of Geodesy and Geodynamics of the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography (IGiK) as a Principal Specialist, and has continued as an Associate Professor since 2018. Since 2018, she has served as the Deputy Head of the Centre of Geodesy and Geodynamics, with a six-month break when she served as the Director of IGiK in 2023. From 2018 to 2022 and from the end of 2023, she serves as Secretary of the Scientific Council of IGiK. She also participates in the work of scientific committees: Committee on Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (member of the Presidium since 2020, Secretary of the Committee from 2020 to 2022) and National Committee on Cooperation with the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (Secretary of the Committee since 2019).

In 1997 she received the Prof. T. Olszak Prize of the Faculty of Physics UW for her Master's thesis and in 2003 the Prize of the Prime Minister for her distinguished doctoral dissertation.

She is a laureate of 7 individual awards of the Rector of the University of Warsaw for scientific or organizational activity, 2 awards of the Dean of the Faculty of Physics UW for teaching activity and 1 award of the Director of IGiK for scientific achievements.

In the years 2005 - 2012 she was a co-organiser and coordinator of the international passive seismic experiment PASSEQ 2006-2008. As a member of international research groups:TOR Working Group, POLONAISE Working Group, CELEBRATION 2000 Experimental Team, SUDETES 2003 Working Group, ALP 2002 Working Group, ESC Working Group, IPY Project Group, PASSEQ Working Group, she was actively involved in field work and data processing of seismic experiments taking place across Europe. She has led 4 research projects and participated in 6 as a principal or contractor, organised 4 international working meetings and co-organised 2 scientific sessions at international geophysical conferences. Her scientific output includes more than 54 publications, mainly in journals from the ISI Master Journal List, and more than 48 presentations at international conferences.
